Create a gorgeous and practical washcloth with this free floret stitch crochet pattern. This stitch pattern is incredibly easy; you’ll just need to know how to double crochet (dc) and slip stitch (sl st) and you’ll be good to go.
I love this pattern worked in three different colors, but it looks just as lovely in one or two colors as well.
The floret stitch pattern is not reversible, as it has a distinct pattern on the right side. However, the back still looks neat and tidy, making this stitch an excellent choice for shawls, scarves or blankets if you want to make something other than a dishcloth.
The instructions below include modifications for adjusting the pattern to any size you like, so feel free to experiment!

What You’ll Need to Crochet the Floret Stitch
Yarn
For my sample dishcloth, I used Drops Paris yarn in three gloriously summery colors – Dandelion (14), Cerise (06) and White (16). You’ll need approximately equal amounts of each color, with a little extra for your border color.
The pattern below includes links to a variety of cotton yarns that are perfect for dishcloths, but of course feel free to use any yarn that suits your particular project.
Color Changes
When working with three colors, you will change colors every row by floating your new color up the side of your work as you go. This means you will not need to cut the yarn in between rows – yay for minimal weaving in!
If you are using two colors, you can use the exact same color-change technique, but this time you will work two rows of each color before changing.
Hook
I used a 5mm H-8 crochet hook for my project, but feel free to use whichever hook size allows you to crochet with an even tension. With this stitch pattern, I do think that slightly tighter stitches create a neater finish so do bear that in mind when selecting your hook.

- beg = beginning
- ch = chain
- dc = double crochet
- rem = remaining
- sc = single crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- st(s) = stitch(es)
- tch = turning chain
General Pattern Notes
- Ch 1 at the start of Row 2 (and any Row 2 repeats) counts as one st.
- For Row 3 (and any Row 3 repeats), you have two options to begin the row:
- Ch 3: counts as one double crochet
- Use a stacked double crochet to eliminate gaps
- Stitch count for each row is given in square brackets [ ] at the end of the row.
- If no stitch count is given then the count is the same as the previous row.
Color Changes
Change colors every row as follows:
- With working yarn, finish row as normal.
- Keeping working yarn to the back of your work, yarn over new color and pull through.
- Pull gently on previous color to pull the new color into the correct starting position for the next row.
- With the new color, work next row as per pattern.

Any #4/Worsted/Medium weight yarn in a cotton or cotton blend. The amounts given here are for Drops Paris in Dandelion (14), Cerise (06) and White (16) (82yds/75m per 50g skein; #4/Worsted/Medium; 100% Cotton).

Washcloth: 8.25″ x 8.25″ / 21cm x 21cm
Tea Towel: 14.25″ x 22.75″ / 37cm x 58cm
Note: you can also add an optional single crochet border around the edge of your project which will add approx 0.5” / 1.25cm to the width and length.

Gauge
13 sts x 15 rows = 4″ x 4″ / 10 cm x 10 cm measured over pattern.
Note:
Gauge is not critical for this project. However, if your gauge does not match the one listed above then your project may turn out a little larger/smaller depending on how loosely/tightly you crochet, and you may use a different amount of yarn than what is listed above.
Adjustments
Stitch multiple: 2 + 1
Starting chain multiple: 2 + 3
- To adjust the width of your project, simply chain any multiple of 2 + 3 to start.
- To adjust the length, simply repeat Row 2-3 until you reach your desired length.
Note: adjusting the size of your project will impact the amount of yarn required.
Written Pattern
Washcloth: With C1, ch 29.
Tea Towel: With C1, ch 49.
Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook (skipped 3 ch count as 1 dc) and each ch across, turn. [Washcloth: 27; Tea Towel: 47]
Change to C2.
Row 2: Ch 1, sk first st, *dc in in next st, sl st in next st; repeat from * across, ending with sl st in top of tch-3, turn.
Change to C3.
Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as one dc OR omit ch-3 and use a stacked dc – see Notes), dc in next st and each st across, ending with last dc in ch-1 sp, turn.
Change to C1.
Washcloth: Repeat Rows 2-3 for a total of 31 rows, or until work measures approx. 8.25″/ 21cm in length.
Tea Towel: Repeat Rows 2-3 for a total of 85 rows, or until work measures approx. 22.75″/ 58cm in length.
Note: Continue to change color at the end of each row, following the color sequence “C1, C2, C3” throughout. Float the yarn loosely up the side of your work on each color change.
BORDER
For the border, you can continue on with the last color worked, or fasten off and join in your chosen border color.
Ch 1 (does not count as a st), sc evenly around the edge of your work, working 3 scs to turn each corner. Join to beg sc with a sl st or invisible join.
Fasten off.
Weave in ends. All done!
