How to Make This Crochet Beanie
Learn how to crochet the Hazel Beanie in just a few easy steps! This free beanie crochet pattern includes stretchy ribbing, a textured body, and crown shaping, with a full video tutorial to guide you from start to finish.

Gather Materials
Grab your worsted weight yarn, 5.5mm (I-9) crochet hook and a stitch marker.

Work the Ribbing
Start with the bottom ribbing using the yarn-over slip stitch pattern.
Work the ribbing flat as a strip, then seam it to form a circle.
This creates a stretchy base that fits comfortably around the head. -
Crochet the Main Body
Join the ribbing and work the main body of the beanie in joined rounds. These are “even” rounds without any shaping.

Shape the Crown
Begin decrease rounds at the top to shape the crown neatly.
Follow the stitch pattern carefully during decrease rounds to maintain texture. -
Cinch and Finish
Cinch the top closed using a tapestry needle or yarn tail.

Construction
This beanie is worked from the bottom up as follows:
- RIBBING: Work the ribbing in a long strip, then fold and seam the edges.
- BODY: Work the body in rounds, beginning with a round worked into the edge of the ribbing. Shaping rounds at the top of the beanie decrease the circumference at the crown.
General Pattern Notes
- The stitch count for each row/round is given in [ ] at the end of the row/round. For Body rounds, the stitch count includes chains within the round.
- If no stitch count is given, then the count is the same as the previous row/round.
- RIBBING: Ch 1 at the start of a row does not count as a stitch.
- BODY: For a neater seam, there is no “ch 1” at the start of each round. Pm in first st to mark the beginning of the round. Move marker up on each subsequent round.
Size Notes
- Instructions are written for seven sizes as follows: Newborn (Baby, Toddler, Child, Tween, Adult S, Adult L)
- When choosing a size, refer to the size table rather than age alone – head sizes can vary quite a bit.
- Before you start, go through the pattern and highlight/mark the stitch counts and row/rounds that correspond to the size you are making (this will make your life much easier!).
Color Changes
The stitch pattern used for this beanie looks great in a solid color or stripes.
If working in stripes, change colors as follows:
- With working yarn, finish round as normal.
- Keeping working yarn to the back of your work, yarn over new color and pull through.
- Pull gently on previous color to pull the new color into the correct starting position for the next round.
- With the new color, work next round as per pattern.
Do not cut yarn in between color changes, simply float the next color up on the inside of your beanie.
Adjustments
This beanie is designed for a close fit. If you prefer a slouchier style, simply add a few extra rounds to the Body section before starting the Crown Shaping.
Gauge
Body: 16 sts x 12 rows = 4″ x 4″ / 10 cm x 10 cm measured over pattern (worked in the round).
Ribbing: 5 sts x 8 rows = 1″ x 2″ / 3 cm x 5 cm measured over yo-slst BLO (see Special Stitches).
Special Stitches
Yarn Over Slip Stitch (yo-slst)
Step 1: Yarn over, insert hook into indicated st, yarn over and pull up a loop. [3 loops on hook]
Step 2: Do NOT yarn over, continue to pull the bottom loop on hook through top 2 loops. (You may find it easier to rotate your hook away from you as you pull through).
Single Crochet/Half Double Crochet 2 Together (sc/hdc2tog)
Step 1: Insert hook into indicated st, yarn over and pull up a loop. [2 loops on hook]
Step 2: Yarn over, insert hook into next st, yarn over and pull up a loop. [4 loops on hook]
Step 3: Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops.
Written Pattern
All Sizes: Newborn (Baby, Toddler, Child, Tween, Adult S, Adult L)
Ribbing
Ch 7 (7, 7, 9, 9, 9, 9).
Row 1: Yo-slst in second ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. [6 (6, 6, 8, 8, 8, 8)]
Row 2: Ch 1, yo-slst BLO in each st across, turn.
Repeat Row 2 for a total of 48 (54, 66, 72, 78, 84, 90) rows.
Your ribbing will measure approximately 12″ / 30.5cm (13.5″ / 34.5cm, 16.5″ / 42cm, 18″ / 45.5cm, 19.5″ / 49.5cm, 21″ / 53.5cm, 22.5″ / 57cm) in length (unstretched).
Do not fasten off. Fold ribbing in half and seam at edges using your preferred seaming method, such as:
- Whip stitch seam or slip stitch seam on the wrong side
- Mattress stitch seam on the right side

Body
Round 1: Sc/hdc2tog (inserting hook first into side of first ribbing row, then into side of next ribbing row), ch 1, *sc/hdc2tog over sides of next 2 ribbing rows, ch 1; repeat from * around, sl st to join to beg st. [48 (56, 64, 72, 80, 84, 88)]
Note: pm in first st to mark the beginning of the round. Move marker up on each subsequent round.
Round 2: Sc/hdc2tog over join st and next ch-1 sp, ch 1, *sc/hdc2tog over next st and next ch-1 sp, ch 1; repeat from * around, sl st to join to beg st.
Rounds 3 – 7 (10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 18): Repeat Round 2.
Crown Shaping
Note: the remaining rounds will decrease the circumference of the hat to make it easier to “cinch in” at the top. Each decrease round will reduce the stitch count by 8 (9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15) sts.
Round 8 (11, 12, 13, 15, 16, 19) (dec): Sc/hdc2tog over join st and first ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc/hdc2tog over next st and next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc/hdc2tog over next st and next ch-1 sp, DO NOT ch 1; *[ sc/hdc2tog over next st and next ch-1 sp, ch 1] two times, sc/hdc2tog over next st and next ch-1 sp, DO NOT ch 1; repeat from * around, sl st to join to beg st. Cut yarn and fasten off, leaving a long tail.
Finishing
Close top of beanie
Turn beanie inside out. Weave tail in and out between the stitches of the last row. Pull tail tightly to close up the top of the beanie. Secure well with several stitches.
Weave in any remaining ends. Turn beanie the right way around. All done!
Add a pom pom (optional)
You can complete the look of your beanie by securing a pre-made, faux-fur pom pom or creating your own using some yarn and a pom pom maker. Make sure to secure the pom pom well to the top centre of the beanie. (See Notes above for links to pre-made pom poms and pom pom makers).
