Why I Love This Crochet Fingerless Mittens Pattern

I think I may have found my favorite fingerless gloves pattern! I absolutely love the texture created by this stitch pattern – it looks equally good in solid colors or stripes.
The fitted ribbing at the wrist gives a snug fit, while the thumb gusset shaping ensures a natural fit around the hand.
This pattern is written in seven sizes, so it’s perfect for gifting or making matching sets for friends and family.
Tips & Tricks for Crochet Success
- Color Changes: For stripes, don’t cut yarn between color changes – simply float the next color on the inside of the mitten. Pull gently to bring the new color into place for the next round.
- Finishing: Finish off the top of your mittens and thumb with a round of slip stitches for a super neat finish.

Pattern Notes

Construction
These fingerless mittens are worked from the cuff upwards in three sections:
- CUFF: Worked in rows, then folded and seamed.
- BODY: Worked in rounds, with the first round worked along the edge of the cuff ribbing. Increases form a thumb gusset, followed by a skipped section to create the thumbhole.
- THUMB: Join yarn at the thumbhole, work a few rounds, then fasten off.
The Right and Left mittens differ only in the placement of the thumb gusset increases and thumbs. Seams are positioned on the palm so they’re hidden when worn.
- Left mitten – thumb gusset increases are made at the start of each round.
- Right mitten – thumb gusset increases are made at the end of each round.
General Pattern Notes
- The stitch count for each row/round is given in [ ] at the end of the row/round. For Body rounds, the stitch count includes chains within the round.
- If no stitch count is given, then the count is the same as the previous row/round.
- RIBBING: Ch 1 at the start of a row does not count as a stitch.
- BODY: There is no “ch 1” at the start of each round. Pm in first st to mark the beginning of the round. Move marker up on each subsequent round.
- Instructions are written for multiple sizes as follows: Toddler (Child, Tween, Adult S, Adult M, Adult L, Adult XL)
- When choosing a size, refer to the size table rather than age alone – hand sizes can vary quite a bit.
- Before you start, go through the pattern and highlight/mark the stitch counts and row/rounds that correspond to the size you are making (this will make your life much easier!).
Color Changes
The stitch pattern used for these mittens looks great in a solid color or stripes.
If working in stripes, change colors as follows:
- With working yarn, finish round as normal.
- Keeping working yarn to the back of your work, yarn over new color and pull through.
- Pull gently on previous color to pull the new color into the correct starting position for the next round.
- With the new color, work next round as per pattern.
Do not cut yarn in between color changes, simply float the next color up on the inside of your mitten.
Adjustments
To lengthen your fingerless mittens work extra rounds after the Split for Thumb section.
If preferred, you can omit the Thumb rounds and simply slip stitch around the thumb opening to finish.
Gauge
Body: 16 sts x 12 rows = 4″ x 4″ / 10 cm x 10 cm measured over pattern (worked in the round).
Ribbing: 5 sts x 8 rows = 1″ x 2″ / 3 cm x 5 cm measured over yo-slst BLO (see Special Stitches).
