Learn how to crochet a beanie! The Jasmine Beanie is an easy top down crochet hat pattern. This hat is fitted but stretchy, so a single hat will accommodate a few different head sizes.
I know in my house, the child-size beanie was passed around between children aged 3-8 and it actually fit them all!

I designed this pattern as part of the Crochet Cancer Challenge 2020, hosted by Sweet Potato 3 Designs.
For my beanie for the Crochet Cancer Challenge, I chose the color gold in support of childhood cancer. As a mom of 3, it is so easy to get lost in the day-to-day ups and downs that come with having a young family. And it is so easy to forget how lucky I am to have 3 healthy and (mostly!) happy children.
In the process of designing and making this hat, each stitch was a little reminder to myself to be grateful for all that I have, and to not sweat the small stuff.
I used Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran in the colorway Caramel which has a lovely rich, golden color.

The first beanie I made was in a solid color. But then, after seeing some of the beautiful striped beanies created by my testers (see below), I decided to make another using the Caramel and Champagne White colorways.

This hat pattern is quite snug-fitting, but the stitch pattern does have tiny little gaps to give some breathability. So, this beanie could easily be worn indoors as a chemo cap.
Crochet Beanie in Multiple Sizes
This crochet beanie pattern is available in 4 sizes – Baby/Child/Teen/Adult. Each size is designed to have a little stretch, so you may find that a single beanie will fit a few different heads. (At least, that was the case in my house!).

The head circumference measurements that I used for each size are as follows:
Baby: 16″ / 40.5cm
Toddler / Child: 19″ / 48.5cm
Teen / Adult Small: 22″ / 56cm
Adult Large: 24″ / 61cm
What you’ll need to make this crochet beanie
I used Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran (#4/medium/worsted weight yarn) for my hat, which is a soft, 100% acrylic yarn. If wool allergies are a concern, then any #4 acrylic yarn would work great. If you are crocheting this hat for a charity, be sure to choose a really soft yarn. Another great option would be Lion Brand Heartland, which is super soft (and is also 100% acrylic).
Crochet your hat in a single color, or as a striped crochet beanie – both ways look great!

You will need two hook sizes for this hat:
- a smaller one (4mm/G-6) for the ribbing to ensure a snug fit (don’t worry about it being too tight, the ribbing is very stretchy).
- a larger one (5.5mm/ I-9) for the body.
How to crochet the Jasmine Beanie
This beanie is crocheted from the top down. You will start by crocheting a circle, increasing on each round until you have reached the required diameter for the size you are making. Then you will stop increasing, and simply crochet in the round until your hat is the right height.

The ribbing is added at the end, and joined to hat body as you go. There is a full photo tutorial here on how to add ribbing to crochet, so don’t worry if you haven’t used this technique before!
This easy hat pattern uses just single crochets, double crochets and chains, so it is a perfect crochet pattern for beginners.
