The Maisie Blanket is a unique mosaic crochet baby blanket with a gorgeous texture.
This blanket is worked using the “inset” mosaic crochet technique. You will work 2 rows with each color, which means that you won’t have a million ends to weave in at the end!
The baby blanket is finished with a few rounds of a single crochet trim, and measures approx. 29″ x 32″ – perfect for a stroller!
I used 4 colors for my blanket for a fun, striped effect, but the blanket would look just as good done in 2 colors.

What you’ll need for this mosaic crochet baby blanket
Yarn
This pattern calls for a worsted weight yarn. For my blanket I used Furls Wander Acrylic, which is a premium, #4/medium acrylic yarn that is super soft, and has a gorgeous sheen.
For baby items especially, it is really important to choose a soft, “non-scratchy” yarn, and Furls Wander Acrylic fits the bill perfectly.
Some other great yarn options that would work for this pattern are:
Hook
For my blanket, I used a 5.5mm (I-9) crochet hook. It is important to keep an even tension in mosaic crochet, especially when working those double crochets in front of the previous 2 rows (more on this later!).
If your crochet tends to be a little on the tight side, you may find that you need to go up another hook size to a 6mm (J-10).

How to crochet the Maisie Baby Blanket
The Maisie Baby Blanket is worked using the “inset” mosaic crochet technique. The pattern contains more detail but I will do my best to summarize mosaic crochet here 🙂
With this technique, rows are worked as a pair e.g. Row 1a, Row 1b, Row 2a, Row 2b etc. Each pair is worked in a single color – there are no “mid-row” color changes.
I have written out the full instructions for each row below, but you may find it easier to follow the chart at the end of the pattern. Especially once you get the hang of this technique, I think you will find yourself anticipating the next step without needing to consult the written pattern at all!
In mosaic crochet, the colorwork design is created on the “a” or Right Side rows. On these “a” rows, every stitch will be:
- a single crochet in the row below OR
- a double crochet 3 rows below OR
- chains and skipped stitches – any time you work a series of chains, you will always work one more chain than there are skipped stitches e.g. ch 2, sk 1 st OR ch 3, sk 2 sts etc.
On “b” or Wrong Side rows, you will follow the same sequence as the “a” row, but there will be no double crochets – instead you will work a single crochet where there is a stitch, and chains where there are chains.
Unless instructed to do so, there is no need to cut yarn in between color changes, you can simply float the yarn up the side of your work as required.

Construction
- This blanket is worked in rows from the bottom up, finishing with a single crochet trim.
- You can choose to work the blanket with 4 colors (as shown in the sample above), or with 2 colors.
General Pattern Notes
- The stitch count for each row is given in [ ] at the end of the row. If no stitch count is given, then the count is the same as the previous row.
- Ch 1 at the start of a row does not count as a stitch.
- “Ch 2, sk next st” counts as one stitch.
- “Ch 3, sk next 2 sts” counts as two stitches.
Mosaic Crochet
- This blanket is worked using the “inset mosaic crochet” technique.
- Rows are worked as a pair e.g. Row 1a, Row 1b, Row 2a, Row 2b etc.
- Each pair is worked in a single color – there are no “mid-row” color changes.
- You can either follow the written instructions in the pattern, or use the colorwork chart in the appendix at the end of the pattern.
- The colorwork pattern is created on “a” rows. Each “b” row follows the same sequence as the previous “a” row:
- work a ch-2 or ch-3 as per the “a” row
- work a sc in every stitch (it does not matter if you are working into a sc or dc – you will always work a sc on “b”rows).
Mosaic Crochet Chart
- Starting in the bottom right corner, read the chart from the bottom upwards as follows:
- read “a” rows from right to left
- read “b” rows from left to right
- A blank square on the chart corresponds to 1 sc in the indicated color.
- A square with a “oo” indicates “ch 2, sk next st”, worked in the same color as the starting sc.
- A square with a “o” indicates “ch 1, sk next st”, worked in the same color as the starting sc.
- A square with a + symbol and either a “oo” or “o” directly underneath indicates 1 dc worked in the skipped stitch of the SAME color 3 rows below.
Color Changes
- At the end of each “b” row, change color on the last yarn over of the last sc, and then begin the next “a” row with the new color.
- Between row pairs, do not cut yarn unless instructed to do so; you will simply float the new yarn up as required for each color change.
SPECIAL STITCHES
Foundation Single Crochet (fsc)

Written Pattern
You can follow the written instructions here, or use the Mosaic Chart in the Appendix. Beginning with C1, you will change color every two rows. At the end of each “b” row, change color on the last yarn over of the last sc.
Note: If you are working the pattern with 2 colors instead of 4, please use “C2” for “C3” and “C4” rows.
