Summer Shawlette | Free Crochet Pattern

The Summer Shawlette is a lightweight, triangle ‘mini-shawl’; perfect for pairing with a crisp white shirt. The zig-zag stitch pattern adds a modern twist to a traditional lace crochet shawl.

Crochet Shawl (hanging)

The shawlette (or shawl, depending on how large you want to make it!) is crocheted from the centre outwards. The zig-zag effect is achieved by alternating dcs and scs in between the open chains.

I love how the shawl has a really sophisticated finish, but requires only simple stitches – chain, single crochet and double crochet, that’s it!

This crochet shawl is a perfect project for a confident beginner or a more experienced crocheter. You will need to concentrate for the first few rows, just to get the hang of the increases, but once you get into the project, it’s actually a very meditative stitch pattern. I loved making it!

Yarn

I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK for my shawl; any #3/DK/Lightweight yarn would be perfect. I used a simple off-white colorway for most of my shawl, with a trim of pale yellow, in the hope of some summer sun coming our way soon!

Notes

Skill Level

Construction

  • The shawl is worked from the center outwards, increasing at both edges and in the center on each row.
  • You can make the shawl larger by following the row repeat sequence in order until you reach your desired size.

Additional Notes

  • Ch 1 at the start of a row does not count as a stitch.
  • Ch 3 at the start of a row counts as 1 dc.
  • Ch 4 at the start of a row counts as 1 dc and 1 ch.
  • Stitch counts are given in [ ] at the end of each row, and include chs.

Finished Measurements

Width: 44” / 112cm

Height (at center): 22” / 56cm

Note: these measurements are for the pattern worked using a DK weight yarn. Using a worsted weight yarn will give you a larger finished piece (approx. 17” x 22”).

Gauge

20 sts x 12 rows = 4” x 4“ / 10cm x 10cm measured over pattern.

Gauge is not critical for this project – feel free to choose any yarn and appropriate hook size that you are comfortable with.

Materials

Hook: 4mm/G-6

Yarn: Any DK/Lightweight/#3 weight yarn. The amount given here is for Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK (137 yds (125m) per 50g skein; #3/Lightweight; 100% Cotton).

  • MC: Champagne White – 331 yds / 304m (121g)
  • CC: Banana Cream – 164 yds / 149m (59g)

ROWS 33 – 46 (or until desired size is reached):

Repeat ROWS 9 – 32.

OPTIONAL: Change to CC1 for the last 8 rows.

You can stop crocheting at any point in the repeat sequence.

Try to end on a row that has [2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc ] in the center as this will give you the neatest triangle shape.

FINISHING

Blocking

Block to measurements (try not to skip this step as it will make your shawl look a lot more polished).

Weave in any remaining ends.

Tassels

Make 3 tassels (approx. 5” in length when folded) for each point. Tie tassel to each point and weave in the ends. Trim ends evenly.

All done!
